More and more employees are quitting their jobs in favor of jobs that come with better compensation and benefits, work/life balance and more meaningful work. It is obvious that the Pandemic brought many changes to the labor market, and so many funeral homes are in the midst of a major labor crisis. More than 4.3 million workers quit their job in August 2021 alone – an historical number – according to the Department of Labor. Leaders within the industry are left wondering what the reasons are behind the Great Resignation. How do we curtail it? The answers are more than complex and require a deep dive into the organization and commitment by leadership to address the challenges.

Randy Anderson is the 2021-22 president of the National Funeral Directors Association. He is a first-generation funeral director and owner of Radney's Funeral Home in Alexander City, Alabama, and Langley Funeral Home in Camp Hill, Alabama. Randy has served the Alabama Funeral Directors Association (AFDA) in a number of capacities, including as a member of several committees. He was a member of AFDA's board of directors and held the positions of secretary/treasurer, vice president, president-elect and president. Anderson was a member of the Funeral Trust of Alabama Board of Directors
Jay Dietz is the Vice President of Operations for The Vertin Group. Dietz began managing funeral homes for Vertin in 1995 and joined the organization’s leadership team in 2013. In his current role, Dietz provides strategic leadership and works to ensure associates have the resources, tools, and support they need by utilizing the Vertin Business System, improving the organization’s ability to provide exceptional experiences.
Jamie Hasty is the Vice President with SESCO Management Consultants. Primarily a generalist, Jamie specializes in management training and development for all levels of managers. She also trains staff on team building, customer service and professionalism. In addition to her training and development skills, Jamie provides client support in the recruitment of select positions, represents employers before the EEOC with discrimination charges and has revised and developed a number of SESCO's training and development programs and systems.
