In 2004, Coleen Ellis turned the heartbreaking loss of her beloved dog, Mico, into a mission by founding the Pet Angel Memorial Center, pioneering pet death care services. Building on this, in 2009, she launched Two Hearts Pet Loss Center, dedicated to supporting others in offering compassionate and meaningful pet death care, as well as serving as an educational resource in the field of pet loss and grief.
Coleen is a Certified Thanatologist and a Certified Pet Loss Professional. She also teaches certification courses on pet loss and grief, helping professionals understand the depts of these experiences. An accomplished author, she wrote Pet Parents: A Journey Through Unconditional Love and Grief and co-authored Forever Friend with Dr. Mary Gardner. In 2014, Coleen co-founded The Pet Loss Center, now part of Gateway Services, expanding her impact in the pet loss care space.
Her leadership extends to founding and serving as past co-chair of the Pet Loss Professional Alliance, as well as past president and current Executive Director of the International Association for Animal Hospice and Palliative Care (IAAHPC). Coleen also serves on the Board of Trustees for the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science and her alma mater, Fort Hays State University, where she was honored with the 2018 Alumni Achievement Award.
