The tragic crash of the C-124 Globemaster II in 1952 remains a poignant chapter in aviation history. After the discovery of  wrecage on Colony Glacier in 2012, Operation Colony Glacier was initiated to recover remains and personal effects from the crash site. This operation, led by Alaskan Command and involving various agencies, has continued annually due to the challenging conditions of the glacier and the limited time available each summer for recovery efforts.

The recovery teams, comprising Air Force Mortuary Affairs Operations specialists and trained mountaineers, navigate the harsh terrain and changing weather to honor those lost and bring closure to their families. The Operation highlights the dedication to preserving the memory of those who served and the importance of accountability in military operations.
