This online course is an overview of the embalming process, offering various perspectives, skills, and techniques that have been gleaned from the author's personal experience in the profession, as well as from seminars, embalming articles, and texts, and from over ten years of working behind the scenes with embalmers on a variety of embalming problems. Many current challenges are discussed. Changing family expectations of higher embalming standards are addressed.

Continuing Education Information: This course is currently approved for 6 CE hours by APFSP and most state licensing boards.

Author

John S. "Jay" Rhodes, III, is a third-generation funeral director. His education includes an A.A. degree in 1968 from St. Petersburg Junior College (SPJC)-Clearwater Campus (now St. Petersburg College), a B.A. in 1970 from the University of South Florida, and an A.S. in Mortuary Science in 1973 from Miami-Dade Community College-North Campus (now Miami Dade College). He established Rhodes Funeral Directors, P.A., in 1976. In 1991 he sold the business and managed it for the Loewen Group until 1995, when he joined The Dodge Company as their representative in west and south Florida. Jay was the first embalming instructor at SPJC, serving for four years.

A past president of the Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practice and past president of the Florida Funeral Directors Association, Jay has presented programs and seminars for NFDA, FFDA, IFDA, FMA, the Georgia Academy of Graduate Embalmers, and the British Institute of Embalmers, as well as numerous other local funeral director organizations.
