Cremation

The U.S. cremation rate is expected to increase from 59.3% in 2022 to 78.7% in 2040. The rising number of cremations can be attributed to changing consumer preferences, weakening religious prohibitions, cost considerations, and environmental concerns.

  • During cremation, the body is incinerated at high temperatures until only ashes (cremains) remain.
  • Cremation is popular due to its simplicity, space-saving benefits, and flexibility in memorialization.
  • However, it does consume significant energy and releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

Included below is the current 2023 NFDA Cremation & Burial Report with statistics and a multitude of additional resources on the topic of cremation offered by NFDA and other organizations.
